OUR BEERS

Since we opened in early 2020, we have brewed over 200 unique beers (as of Jan 2024). We continue to develop new recipes while maintaining a few “flagship” brews. Below you’ll find the names and backstories behind each beer that has graced our taps. Every beer name is tied to something local - whether it be simple landmarks or wild and often hard to believe stories. We hope to keep these stories alive and retold for generations to come.

We brew all of our beers with fresh spring water from Bear Lithia Springs just on the edge of town. We truck the water straight from the spring and into our boil kettles for brewing. We are the only brewery in the country that uses pure lithia water like we do. The Washington Post featured us for this. Bear Lithia Springs water has a long and rich history of being used for its medicinal value and unparalleled quality. We think the impact it has on our brews is significant. We use only the highest quality ingredients every step of the way, and give local farmers our spent grain at the end of the brew process.

  • Appalachian Apricot

    Kettle Sour – 5.3% ABV

We get a lot of AT through-hikers in our taproom. You can often smell them before they even walk in. These hardcore trail warriors are as much in need of a cold refreshing drink as they are in need of a shower. Whether you're fresh off the Appalachian Trail or you're a thirsty purebred from deep Appalachia, this kettle sour - brewed with apricots - offers you a tart and refreshing, well-balanced thirst quencher.

  • AppleTuley Pie

Apple Pie Gose - 7% ABV

The base recipe for this beer is “Gose Tuley,” named after Colonel Gos Tuley, who was responsible for killing the last known indigenous Virginia Elk in 1855 just North of us. That very elk is still on display at the Smithsonian today. We often like to blame the disappearance of our native eastern elk on Teddy Roosevelt, who gifted a whole herd to New Zealand, which is like a heaven of sorts. Whether they are gone as a result of unrestricted hunting by people like Gos Tuley, or by way of zealous generosity from ol’ Teddy, either way we ain’t happy they’re gone. We fruited this Gose with apple, and additional flavors (graham cracker and vanilla) for a delicious apple pie taste. A tart and fruity start with a smooth graham cracker finish. A sour memory deserves a sour beer.

  • April Caught Bar

Apricot Blonde Ale - 5.8% ABV

April is when our local black bear become most active, post hibernation. They are usually ravenous from their long cold slumber, and they can be found foraging for fruit all over the Blue Ridge Mountains AND neighboring communities. So next time you catch a bear “foraging” in your garbage can, extend a little sympathy before you shoo or shoot. After all, everybody awakens from seasons of slumber a little extra hungry and thirsty. Quench your own post-hibernation thirst with this delicious apricot blonde ale (appropriately tapped in in April)! It is light and refreshing. Not too sweet, not too bitter, not too strong. Juuuuuust right.

  • Arlo's Antivenom

Jalepeño Double IPA - 8% ABV

In the early 1990’s, an Elkton man from the ‘Nekid Crik’ community made national news when he was bit by a rattlesnake. He bit the snake’s head off, getting bit again on his lip and tongue in the process. One headline read, “Elkton Man Bit By Rattlesnake, Bites Back!” In an interview with another news source, he simply said, “the snake bit me first.” We couldn’t let a legendary local story like this go to waste, so we bring you this beer with a bite (and a bit of burn on the tongue) as a tribute to local legend, Arlo. Citra and Azaca Hops convey in the flavor profile, with a small dose of pineapple and mango, and a strong and spicy jalapeño bite on the finish.

  • Awiequa

    Imperial Gose (+Passion Fruit +Lime) - 12.5% ABV

”Awiequa,” pronounced ‘ah-wee-eh-qua,’ is Cherokee for “great deer,” which is what the Cherokee tribe that once lived here called the native elk. Early European settlers to the area originally called the elk “moose,” because of how large they were and because they had nothing else more similar to compare them to. The base recipe for this imperial Gose is our popular “Gose Tuley,” named after Gos Tuley, who is credited with killing the last known native Virginia elk. That very elk is still on display at the Smithsonian. This beer is a tribute to that last “great deer,” and it honors the memory of the many native inhabitants of our beautiful valley that are no longer here. This Gose has a subtle saltiness and sourness, like how we feel towards Gos Tuley, but it is strong and rich in flavor, like the old Awiequa!

  • Awiequa Asgina

Tequila Barrel Aged Imperial Gose (+Mango +Lime) – 13.3% ABV

This version of Awiequa was aged in a tequila barrel for some extra kick! “Asgina” is Cherokee for “Ghost,” which is fitting as the Awiequa are no more, and considering we aged this in a spirits barrel.

  • Baraille No Bas

Double-Oaked Bourbon Barrel Aged Wee Heavy - 10.9% ABV

Wee took our delicious “Bier No Bas” wee heavy and barrel aged it on our award winning private family reserve whiskey barrel. One of our brewers, Aaron, married into a Scottish family, whose old clan motto is “Buaidh No Bas,” which means “Victory Or Death!” This beer is an in-house tribute to that clan. It boasts rich, malty, dried fruit character with a smooth caramel body and a complex mix of UK grains and hops. Throw the rich complexities of that flavor profile in with the influence of a top-notch double-oaked bourbon barrel, and it makes for a phenomenal beverage. We think that family/clan mottos should make a comeback. Every family deserves a good motto or slogan! For now, we like the idea of “Bier No Bas,” translated to “Beer Or Death!” Because, after all, a good beer is certainly a victory in its own right, and this beer is definitely no exception.

  • Bars No Stars

    British IPA – 6.5% ABV

Nobody likes to admit it, but we are not too far removed from the crown. Revolution is at the core of our identity, but we’ve always needed something to unite against, right? We have the Brits to thank for meeting that demand! A toast to our pals across the pond! This is not your typical American IPA. We used Peat-smoked malt with UK Fuggles hops, East Kent Goldings hops, and British Ale yeast to create this interesting and delicious beer. It is smooth and smoky.

  • Bastion De La Vallée

Biére De Garde – 8.2% ABV

During the French & Indian War the French had secured most of the western border of the Appalachian Mountains. In an effort to prevent the French from moving this way across the mountains, English colonies incentivized settlers to move into the Shenandoah Valley to create a stronghold of sorts. “Bastion” is French for “Stronghold.” So, in the spirit of keeping the French out, we brewed this French style Biere De Garde – “Beer For Keeping” the French out!

  • Beerocracy

    Imperial Stout – 10.5% ABV

This strong imperial stout has a dark chocolate & vanilla fragrance, and a rich, full-bodied flavor, with hints of espresso. Fermented with oak spirals and Madagascar vanilla. Like most beerocrats, this one probably has more power and influence than it should. Drink it wisely.

  • Beinn Ghorm

    Scotch Ale – 10.2% ABV

Scottish Gaelic for “Blue Mountain,” this strong and boozy scotch ale is a suitable beer for strong mountain men (and women, of course) who can relate to the spirit of blue war-paint-covered, kilted highland warriors who ain’t takin’ no crap from tyrants! Fuel your inner William Wallace, shout “FREEDOooooOOOoom!” from the hollers and hilltops, and drink down Beinn Ghorm!

  • Bell-Door Shine

Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine - 14.5% ABV

We brewed our rich and delicious barleywine, “Bell-Door Barley,” and aged it in a Ragged Branch double-oaked, wheated, bourbon barrel for 8 months to bring you this special Fall treat! We couldn’t be happier with how this batch came out. The flavor is smooth, rich, and dynamic, with all kinds of booze and remnant deliciousness from the barrel’s history. We all know about the robust liquids that flow out of the hollers. This beer is a tribute to those that come through the “Bell Door!”

  • Bell-Door Barley

    Barleywine – 11.5% ABV

Only the strongest drinks come through the Bell Door. This one is dark rich, with a strong caramel flavor and a smooth finish. Be careful though. This one will sneak up on you! This particular tap-in (September 2023) is especially delicious. As is consistent with the style, this single keg release has been cellared for 6 months to proper maturity. The flavor is smooth and dynamic, much like a good wine that has been cellared to maturity.

  • Belsnickeling

    Christmas Stout – 6.3% ABV

CHEER or FEAR, Belsnickel is HERE! This lost Christmas custom used to be popular here in our own Rockingham County. Belsnickel, who was like a dirty, crotchety, creepier version of Santa, would bang on your door sometime around Christmas, insist to be let in, and would swat your children with a stick if they had been naughty. It was often customary to bribe the Belsnickel to leave by giving him an alcoholic beverage. In the spirit of the holidays, we bring you this Christmas stout, which is full of Christmas spirit, and a hint of Belsnickel spice.

We used vodka-soaked cocoa nibs and Cognac-soaked vanilla beans, plus a small dose of cinnamon, for a festive and richly balanced flavor experience!

  • Bier No Bas

Wee Heavy (Scotch Ale) – 8.5% ABV

One of our brewers, Aaron, married into a Scottish family, whose old clan motto is “Buaidh No Bas,” which means “Victory Or Death!” This beer is an in-house tribute to that clan. It boasts rich, malty, dried fruit character with a smooth caramel body and a complex mix of UK grains and hops. We think that family/clan mottos should make a comeback. Every family deserves a good motto or slogan! For now, we like the idea of “Bier No Bas,” translated to “Beer Or Death!”

  • Bitter Behaze

Double New England IPA (+Orange) - 7.2% ABV

In the same family as our original NEIPA, “Sheridan’s Raid,” this IPA is a more hazy and slightly more bitter variant (at 68 IBU)! It is brewed with Nelson Sauvin and Azacca hops, and finished off with a touch of orange for a well balanced IPA. If you like a dense IPA with a solid bitter finish, then this is the beer for you. Sheridan used dirty tactics in the Valley Campaign during the Civil War, which left a deep haze of smoke as far as the eye could see, and left a lasting bitterness with valley folks. So, for anyone who ain’t from ‘round these parts and thinks they can cause trouble again, they better behave when they visit. Valley folks won’t let it happen again.

  • Black Bear

Blackberry Blonde Ale - 5.2% ABV

Our popular ‘Blonde Bear’ recipe makes up the base for this one, which we fruited with a bunch of all natural blackberry puree! We’ve brewed ‘Blonde Bear,’ ‘Blue Bear,’ ‘Straw Bear,’ and now we’ve turned to the much more commonly known combo. Black Bear is a simple, tart and delicious, tribute to our native black bear population and the abundance of native blackberries scattered all over our mountains. Both are a beautiful sight to see when you’re in the mountains; however, less pleasant if you find yourself between the two.here

  • Blackbeard's Revenge (Collab w/ 1718 Brewing)

Rum Barrel Aged English Old Ale – 10.4% ABV

Early this year, we took a dark rum barrel and filled it with our popular English Old Ale, “Old Spotswood,” and we let it soak up that sweet and boozy dark rum flavor for 7 months! 1718 Brewing, on Ocracoke Island, is named after the year that Blackbeard the pirate was beheaded there on the island. Who had Blackbeard killed, you ask? None other than our own Alexander Spotswood, the namesake for our beer! ‘Twas on the 22nd of November, 1718, that Blackbeard lost his head. Now, just over 300 years later, Blackbeard is getting his revenge by having Old Spotswood shoved into a pirate rum barrel - just in time to observe the anniversary of the beheading! A perfect beer for all you modern day pirates!.. We shared our “Old Spotswood” recipe with 1718 Brewing, who brewed the same beer and also aged it in rum barrels. 1718 always has an excellent selection of beers on tap! If you’re ever down in their NECK of the woods, they are well worth a visit!

  • Blonde Bear

    Blonde Ale – 5.2% ABV

We’ve got plenty of black bears, the West has plenty of brown bears, but one rarely sees the elusive blonde bear dancing about in our blue mountains. This Blonde is smooth and easy to drink, and tends to be a great fit for someone who wants the closest thing to a light, domestic style ale. This flagship recipe is a tribute to our local friend, known as the “Blonde Bear” (also known as the “Dancing Bear”). He is who originally taught August, our head brewer, how to brew many years ago - ultimately leading to the quality craftsmanship we have in our brew cellar today! Cheers to the Blonde Bear!

  • BLUE Bear (e)

Blueberry Blonde Ale – 5.2% ABV

Our popular “Blonde Bear” spent too much time in the Blue Ridge Mountains and turned BLUE! We gently fruited our Blonde Ale with blueberry to add a little sweetness and extra flavor, because… why not?

  • Bock On Course

    Eisbock - 11.5% ABV

The Eisbock style was the strong German result of a cold accident at a big Bavarian brewery in the 1800’s. On its way to becoming a traditional Bock, it froze overnight and became an Eisbock - stronger with a more densely packed malt flavor profile due to the water freezing out of it. Likewise, in the early 1700’s a group of 100 German immigrants traveling across the ocean to Pennsylvania got off course in a storm and accidentally ended up in Virginia, where they were sold into indentured servitude to our own Alexander Spotswood. They meant to be Pennsylvanians, but as fortune would have it they became something far better: Virginians! (For more information about this story, see the description for another one of our German beers: “Wort 100”)

  • Boysen Bear

Boysenberry Blonde Ale - 6.6% ABV

Our popular ‘Blonde Bear’ recipe makes up the base for this one, which we fruited with a bunch of all natural boysenberry puree! We’ve brewed ‘Blonde Bear,’ ‘Blue Bear,’ ‘Straw Bear,’ ‘Raspy Bear,’ ‘Polar Bear,’ and ‘Black Bear.’ Our first every fruited beer was a boysenberry sour. This boysenberry blonde ale is tapping in just in time to celebrate our anniversary. Berries and bears just go well together. Both are a beautiful sight to see when you’re in the mountains; however, less pleasant if you find yourself between the two.

  • BoysenBerrytown

    Kettle Sour – 5.3% ABV

A delicious, well balanced, kettle sour. Brewed with boysenberries, this one is a refreshing, smooth, crisp, easy-drinker. It is tart, but not too tart.

  • BoysenTuley Pie

    Boysenberry + Grahamcracker + Vanilla GOSE – 6.0% ABV

We fruited this Gose with boysenberries, with additional flavors (graham cracker and vanilla) for a delicious boysenberry pie taste. A tart and fruity start with a smooth graham cracker finish. A sour memory deserves a sour beer.

  • BR Brewberry

    Blueberry Sour – 5.3% ABV

This blueberry sour is a deliciously tart, well-balanced, and refreshing beer! Many locals have their own secret spots to forage for wild Blue Ridge Mountain blueberries, but they won’t tell you where they are. Look no further! Let us be your secret spot for “foraging” to get your blueberry fix!

  • Bruins Gap

Oud Bruin / Flanders Brown - 6.4% ABV

”Oud Bruin” means “Old Brown.” This style is also referred to as a “Flanders Brown.” Less known and less common than the Flanders Red style, but from the same region of West Flanders, Belgium. It is a dark sour ale, bursting with rich flavors, and brewed with Bordeaux-soaked French oak spirals and black currant puree. You will taste lightly tarted notes of chocolate, vanilla, and dark berries, supported by a smooth malt backbone. Just down the road from us is Browns Gap, where a pleasant gravel road connects the valley to the top of the ridge at Skyline Drive. It is a backdoor gateway to all sorts of pleasantries: beautiful scenery, flowing streams, wild berries, wildlife, etc... If you’re a cyclist, then Browns Gap means something different, as it has always been closed to cyclists. Does this stop anyone from cranking up it? Nope. The restrictions only add to the thrill and adventure. How will you experience Browns Gap? Will you take the risk?

  • Campin' Curly

Triple IPA (with Lemon + Toasted Coconut + Vanilla + Marshmallow) – 10.5% ABV

This full-flavored TIPA packs a punch! Deliciously balanced with 100% Citra hops, with lemon, toasted coconut, vanilla, and marshmallow. This is a great campfire beer because A) it will help you to fall asleep on those roots and rocks that you call a bed, and B) because who doesn’t love marshmallows around a campfire?! There was a well-known character by the name of Curly years ago who used to set up camp anywhere and everywhere here in town (with or without permission). He spent a number of years living under a tarp down on the river on the edge of town. Wherever he went was his campsite.

  • Captain Conrad

ESB (Extra Special Bitter – English Ale) NITRO – 5.9% ABV

Fun Fact: Elkton used to be called “Conrad’s Store.” Captain Conrad, as an officer with our local militia, fought the Brits in the American Revolution. In 1812, the year we fought the Brits again, his son carried on his father’s legacy of freedom by erecting the store that would become Elkton – despite efforts by our pals across the pond to retain their tyrannical control. This ESB is a tribute to Captain Conrad and his legacy that shaped Elkton’s founding. It is smooth and malt-forward, with a touch of English bitterness thrown in.

  • Circus Bear

Salted Caramel Apple Imperial Blonde Ale - 10.5% ABV

Our first imperial blonde! Keeping with tradition, this hefty blonde is a ‘bear’ (like all but one blonde ale before it: Blonde Bear, Blue Bear, Black Bear, Raspy Bear, Straw Bear, Boysen Bear). Don’t let the inviting flavors of the Circus Bear fool you - it packs a punch! There have been many cuddly looking bears dressed up to appear domesticated and friendly under many a circus tent. But it would be wise not to try snuggling with one. Approach this beer with the same caution. Enjoy the refreshing and delicious flavor, but brace for the strong effects that follow! There have been circuses in the past that have come through town, but one bear in particular sticks out: Odell’s polar bear. It was once a circus bear, who somehow ended up back in Rocky Bar on its way to a zoo in New England.

  • Clumpkin

    Pumpkin Ale - 6.7% ABV

We baked pumpkins that were generously given to us by the local Cline’s Family Farm, and concocted a mix that also included roasted chestnuts, pumpkin spice and butter pecan flavors. The Cline family is keeping the tradition of growing pumpkins, which has been done in North America for thousands of years. This beer is a simple tribute to that ancient local tradition and the locals who keep it alive! We could have called it “Cline’s Pumpkin,” but Clumpkin is more fun to say.

  • Crawford's Cat

Black Cherry + Orange SOUR – 5.3% ABV

In the same crushable spirit as our super popular “Odell’s Tiger,” this sour is equally (if not MORE) crushable! An excellent sour to enjoy amidst the warmer weather! Many craft beer drinkers may be offended by its tart non-beer-like flavor, but we say to each their own, and don’t be afraid to branch out! Likewise, To most people Mr. Crawford’s pets were terrifying and deadly beasts, but to him they were just kitty cats. It isn’t hard to imagine him reclined in a chair, hardly visible beneath a giant bengal tiger laying across his lap. Let the exotic and delicious flavor of Crawford’s Cat bring you comfort where others might find fear.

  • CSS Shenandoah

    Triple IPA – 10% ABV

The CSS Shenandoah signifies the real end of the US Civil War, when it surrendered about seven months after General Robert E Lee’s formal surrender in April of 1865. CSS Shenandoah was the only Confederate vessel to circumnavigate the globe. It sunk or captured a total of 38 Union ships and took nearly 1000 prisoners without a single casualty.

  • Dairy Quay

Irish Milk Stout - 5% ABV

When Ireland had a shortage of taters, Irish people migrated in droves to America. As a result, there is no shortage of the Irish worldwide. Much like there is no shortage of cattle here in Rockingham County, which has more cattle than people, more cattle than any other county in Virginia in fact. Here’s to the dairy capital of Virginia, with a little Irish thrown in. This is a smooth traditional Irish stout with a tasty dose of dairy thrown in.

  • Dry Run Sour

    Kettle Sour – 5.3% ABV

It’s like an IPA for people who hate IPA’s! A Non-fruited, dry hopped sour, with a clean and refreshing taste. Like Dry Run Falls, there is irony in the name: it is dry in spirit yet flowing with refreshment.

  • Dubbel Trubbel

    Belgian Dubbel - 8.2% ABV

Locals are familiar with the saying, “two F’s and two T’s means double fun and double trouble!” This delicious Belgian Dubbel is bursting with smooth and dark malt flavor. It goes down easy for an 8.2 percent beer. That’s the fun part. But if you aren’t careful with it, then the trouble comes. Here’s to all those locals who are branded by double fun and Dubbel Trubbel (and who fill more local phonebook pages than any other name)!

  • Dunstberg – (Elktoberfest!)

    Hefeweizen – 6.2% ABV

“Dunstberg” means “Hazy Mountain” in German. Similar flavor attributes to its predecessor, Weizen Bär, but more dense and hazy. This Hefeweizen is rich with fragrance and flavor notes of banana ester, with a strong wheat backbone! On clear, hot days spent in the mountain, you may more likely crave a lighter beer, like Weizen Bär, but on cool and cloudy days, something stronger is needed to quench your post-mountain adventure thirst. Enter Dunstberg!

  • Elk Bagger

    Sour DIPA - 7.5% ABV

Since day one, we have offered a mixed beer we called “Mercky Sour,” which was a mix of our flagship DIPA (Mercky Water) and whichever kettle sour we have tapped in. This mix has become enough of a staple here that we decided to go ahead and brew a proper Sour DIPA - balanced with hoppy bitterness AND tart sourness. The base IPA recipe is in line with our delicious “RugSacker” IPA’s, which we then soured and fruited with passion fruit. RugSacker was a New England IPA whose bitterness represented a dis against the carpetbaggers that came down from the North and exploited the vulnerable Shenandoah Valley folks after the Civil War. Just a few years before the war, the last known native Virginia elk was poached just North of Elkton, a town whose namesake was indicative of the vast herds of elk that used to roam these hills. Let this be a lesson: Unrestrained exploitation leads to sour and bitter memories! Or in this case, a delicious beer.

  • Elk Hunt 200

Chocolate Raspberry Imperial Stout 9% ABV

What better way to commemorate brewing 200 unique beers than to release a rich and heavy stout! To all of those Untappd fans who religiously check in our beers, earning their “Elk Hunting” badges, we salute you! We have brewed 200 unique beers. That is a lot of “Elk Hunting.” There was also a lot of unregulated elk hunting in the olden days, leading to the extinction of the animals that once filled this valley (and which are the namesake of our town). Since you can’t hunt elk here anymore, we have given you a better alternative! How many of our 200 beers have you bagged in your hunting endeavors? How many have you mounted on your trophy room walls?? Well, you will be pleased to know that our beers will never go extinct, so hunt away! Cheers to 200 beers!

  • Elk Reserve One

Anniversary Rye Barrel Stout – 12% ABV

Our first barrel-aged stout! Aged for 6 months in a Veritas Winery turned Ragged Branch Distillery barrel. We used a full bottle of our private family reserve bourbon to rehydrate and condition the barrel before filling it with our stout. Released just in time to celebrate ONE YEAR since opening our doors. We opened three weeks before the whole world shut down, which gives us another reason to celebrate. We survived 2020! Anyone who can say that should have a glass of this fantastic beer. It is rich, full-bodied, and strong, with soft notes of sweetness and smoothness from the barrel’s previous fillings. Here’s to one year, and many more to come! Cheers!

  • Elk Reserve Two

Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout - 12% ABV

Our second anniversary barrel-aged stout! Aged for almost eight months in a Ragged Branch Distillery signature double-oaked bourbon barrel. We poured a bottle of our private family reserve, uncut/barrel proof, straight rye whiskey into the barrel before the stout to rehydrate and condition the barrel, which also adds to the rich flavor and aroma of the finished product. Released just in time to celebrate TWO YEARS since opening our doors. We opened our doors just three weeks before the whole world shut down, which gives us another reason to celebrate. We survived 2020 AND 2021 - both crazy years! Anyone who can say that should have a glass of this fantastic beer. It is rich, boozy, chocolatey, full-bodied, and strong, with soft notes of sweetness and smoothness from the barrel’s previous filling. Here’s to two years, and many more to come! Cheers!

  • Elk Reserve Three

Honey Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout - 14.3% ABV

Our THREE YEAR anniversary stout (Feb 2023 release). This barrel has a complex history, which led to a complex and bold stout flavor. Ragged Branch distillery took a freshly emptied signature bourbon barrel and filled it with fresh honey from a local apiary and aged honey. Then after jarring the bourbon barrel aged honey, they refilled the barrel with their signature bourbon and finished it off to release a cask strength honey bourbon. Then we took that barrel and filled it with our stout and aged it for 7 months to bring you this honey bourbon barrel aged stout! It is dark, complex, rich, and quite boozy. In short, it is delicious! Here’s to three years and many more to come!

  • Elk’s Share #1

    Imperial Stout – 10.5% ABV

You’ve probably heard of the “Angel’s Share,” which refers to the spirits that escape the barrel during the whiskey aging process. Much the same, this tiny share of our second anniversary stout is reserved as a tribute to the long-since departed souls of Shenandoah Valley elk. This is the base stout for our two-year anniversary release, which couldn’t fit in the bourbon barrel. This is a foretaste of the stout that is currently aging in our cellar until February. Deep, dark, heavy, roasted goodness.

  • Elk's Share #2

    Imperial Stout - 10.5% ABV

You’ve probably heard of the “Angel’s Share,” which refers to the spirits that escape the barrel during the whiskey aging process. Much the same, this tiny share of our third anniversary stout is reserved as a tribute to the long-since departed souls of Shenandoah Valley elk. This is the base stout for our three-year anniversary release, which couldn’t fit in the bourbon barrel. This is a foretaste of the stout that is currently aging in our cellar until February. Deep, dark, heavy, roasted goodness.

  • Elk's Share #3

    Imperial Stout – 10.5% ABV

You’ve probably heard of the “Angel’s Share,” which refers to the spirits that escape the barrel during the whiskey aging process. Much the same, this tiny share of our third anniversary stout is reserved as a tribute to the long-since departed souls of Shenandoah Valley elk. This is the base stout for our three-year anniversary release, which couldn’t fit in the bourbon barrel. This base recipe was aged in a honey bourbon barrel for our three year anniversary release.

  • Elksperiment 1

Small Batch IPA – 6% ABV

All of our beers would be considered small batch beers, but when we actually label one “Small Batch” what we mean is “super tiny batch.” This little pilot-batch IPA will not last long! With a strong tropical aroma and a smooth bitter finish, this is sure to be a favorite among our IPA-drinkers. Come give it a little taste before it is gone!

  • Elk Tears

    Gose – 4.6% ABV

In 1855, Gos Tuley killed the last known native Virginia elk. Many an elk across the yet to be hunted frontier shed tears over the unrestricted slaughter of their native Virginia brethren. We caught some of those salty tears for this beer! This super light traditional session gose is a tribute to the majestic beasts that once called this place home, and from whom derived our town’s namesake. Let their tears not go to waste! Drink up! Brewed with sea salt, coriander, and a delicate dose of natural raspberry puree.

Amber, like the color of the leaves after they fall to their final resting places on the forest floor. The perfect Fall campfire beer to celebrate Oktoberfest! Smooth and easily drinkable malt flavor.

  • Elkton Prospector

    Double IPA – 8% ABV

Congratulations! You just struck GOLD! Elkton never really had much luck in the golden glory days of gold mining, but we’re here to change that! Brewed with Golden Promise Malt/Barley, and El Dorado (City of GOLD) Hops and a small dose of Citra, we promise you’ll strike gold every time you order this one! Low IBU, high reward.

  • Elkton Ryerish

    Rye Stout - 4.8% ABV

A tip of the hat to all of our locals who come from Irish heritage. The world would be a far less fun place without you! There’s a song that says, “wherever you go around the world you’ll find an Irish pub.” There is truth to that, thanks to the many Irish immigrants who settled all over the world, including in our little Shenandoah Valley. Cheers to the Elkton Irish! Dark roasted rye and a mix of Irish ingredients make this one an old Irish treat. Bold, robust flavor.

  • Field Day

Strawberry Cotton Candy SOUR – 6% ABV

This sweet and tart sour will hit your glands in all the right places. Like a mouthful of cotton candy on a hot day at Elkton’s annual Field Day!

  • Fig Meadows

Fig Wheat Beer – 5.8% ABV

If you’ve visited Shenandoah National Park, chances are you’re familiar with Big Meadows, which is a very popular mountaintop destination for tourists and locals alike. This pleasant beer is a tribute to that pleasant mountaintop meadow. While figs are not native to Virginia, they do have a deep local history. Thomas Jefferson was known to be fond of figs and fermenting them at Monticello: his homestead just an hour from here. This wheat beer is refreshing and full of flavor. It is rich in wheat with soft and subtle fig undertones, with hints of banana, clove, and nuttiness.

  • Flagpole Knob

    Amber Lager - 4.7% ABV

Very close to Reddish Knob, both in flavor and proximity! Everyone loves to go up to Reddish for a number of reasons, but Flagpole is more for the people who prefer to get away from the crowds and breathe in that crisp mountaintop air without breathing in the smoke and exhaust fumes of a congested Reddish Knob. Likewise, this lager is crisp, smooth, unadulterated. A simple pleasure.

  • Forged By George

    Pre-Prohibition Porter on NITRO – 5.1% ABV

This pre-prohibition style porter traces its origins back to George Washington’s famous recipe! Most present day porters are brewed with an ale yeast, whereas this one is brewed with a lager yeast, giving it a more mellow and crisp texture and flavor. It is dark, smooth, and full of the roasted malt flavor you’d expect out of a good porter, with a subtle bit of sweetness on the backend from the signature molasses (as George W.’s recipe called for). Just as George Washington was critical in forging our country (and this beer recipe), so also was George Conrad in forging our town! He built and operated the store which became the namesake of our town before it was changed to “Elkton.” He just so happened to build the store in 1812, the same year the bitter Brits decided to try and take us back. Ironically, George Conrad’s dad was a Captain in the US Revolution, so you could say both George’s are connected one way or another.

  • Front Line Fuel

    Dry-Hopped IPA – 6.6% ABV

This traditional IPA recipe’s origins reach way back to the beers England would brew to send on the long journey to the troops in India long ago. We took this traditional recipe and dry-hopped it, which mellows out the hops bitterness and boosts the hops flavor. In local history, the Shenandoah Valley was known as the “Breadbasket of the Confederacy.” It was the biggest source of fuel for the troops on the front lines. This is why it was such a significant target for the Union. Everyone is on the front lines somewhere, and this approachable IPA is fuel for everyone! It is very crushable, yet has a robust hops flavor with a touch of bitterness on the back end.

  • Fruit Farm

    Kettle Sour – 5.3% ABV

Why settle for one fruit when you can have three! Orange, Guava, and Passion Fruit combine to form the perfect medley for this sour. This beer is a tribute to the many small farmers around the valley who appreciate variety. Not to mention it is a great source of refreshment after a long day under the sun!

  • Fruit Farm 2

    Mango + Peach + Guava SOUR – 5.3% ABV

Why settle for one fruit when you can have three! Mango, Peach, and Passionfruit combine to form the perfect medley for this sour. This beer is a tribute to the many small farmers around the valley who appreciate variety (including the one one “Fruit Farm Lane”). Not to mention it is a great source of refreshment after a long day under the sun!

  • Fruitier Farm

    Black Cherry + P.O.G. (Passion Fruit + Orange + Guava) SOUR – 6% ABV

Why settle for one fruit when you can have FOUR! Black Cherry and the popular P.O.G. (Passion Fruit, Orange, Guava) combine to form a delicious variant of our popular “Fruit Farm” sour. Very much the same beer, but FRUITIER! This beer is a tribute to the many small farmers around the valley who appreciate variety. Not to mention it is a great source of refreshment after a long day under the sun! Additionally, “Fruit Farm” happens to be the name of a local lane where you can hand-pick fruit!

  • Fruity Bear

Passion Fruit + Orange + Guava Blonde Ale - 5.2% ABV

We used the same fruit medley as our very popular “Fruit Farm” sour for this blonde ale, and we’re glad we did! This is a light, crushable, fruit-forward, easy drinker! The base recipe is “Blonde Bear,” which is one of our flagship beers - due to its light and refreshing flavor that keeps many of our regulars loyal to drinking it. So what do you get when you mix Fruit Farm with Blonde Bear? “Fruity Bear,” of course! Our local wild black bears are currently gobbling up all the FRUIT that our bountiful Blue Ridge Mountains can BEAR (see what we did there?) in order to plump up for their winter slumber. In the same spirit of BEARing FRUIT, we give you Fruity Bear so you too can plump up for the winter!

  • Ginger Buck

Gingerbread Baltic Porter – 9.5% ABV

Our first Baltic Porter, which is the base recipe for this one, was named after Herman Zetty’s horse, “Old Buck.” This one has that same rich and dense flavor PLUS some seasonal spice thrown in! Herman was known to ride Ol’ Buck everywhere he went in the early to mid 1900’s. Ol’ Buck carried Herman to the theater to see that western flick where Herman infamously got a bit too trigger happy and drew his six-shooter out to shoot the screen - in an attempt to take out the bandits. It takes a strong horse to handle a character like Herman Zetty. Ol’ Buck was notorious for strolling right into the old Bear Pharmacy - with Herman on his back - where Herman would demand, “I need a coke for Ol’ Buck!” We’d like to think he may have occasionally ordered a ginger ale for Buck as well. This beer is full of strong and robust flavor - with distinctive malt aromas of caramelized sugars, licorice, and subtle notes of chocolate, and a strong gingerbread spice aroma and flavor. If you’re up for a wild ride, then hop on Ol’ Buck! But if you’re not careful, you may get bucked off!

  • Golden Horsehoe

    Golden Ale – 5.6% ABV

As good as fresh hay tasted to Alexander Spotswood’s famished horse, this beer is a tribute to the knights of the golden horseshoe: Spotswood’s band of explorers who blazed the trail through the valley, passing by the spot that would someday become home to Elkton Brewing Co.

  • Gose Tuley

    Dry-Hopped GOSE – 5% ABV

In 1855, Colonel Gos Tuley was responsible for killing the last known indigenous Virginia Elk just North of us. That very elk is still on display at the Smithsonian today. Fast forward about 170 years, and many of us would probably have preferred Gos Tuley be stuffed and put on display instead. Either way, this sour beer is the perfect beer to serve as a memorial to that sour memory. Dry-hopped with Amarillo and Cashmere hops, and with no fruit additives, this is a solid, tart, crushable Gose!

  • Gov'na Al

    English Bitter – 3.8% ABV

Alexander Spotswood is known in history for many things. Locally, he is most well known for leading the 1716 expedition where he and his large crew “discovered” the Shenandoah Valley (they were the first non-indigenous people to step foot in the valley). Spotswood and his crew, who became known as the “Knights of the Golden Horseshoe,” were no doubt famished and in need of liquid refreshment. This beer would have suited them well, as it is full of robust English malt flavor yet low enough ABV for them to keep their wits about them while in an unknown land. So, when you come off the Blue Ridge looking to rehydrate, but you don’t want to compromise on rich malt flavor, look no further! Cheers to Virginia’s ol’ Gov’na Al!

  • Greene n' Orange

Irish Coffee Stout – 6.6% ABV

Not only are they nearby neighboring counties, but they are colors that represent the flag of many locals’ heritage. Whether you come from catholic-green or protestant-orange, we can learn a thing or two from the Irish: If you drink enough together, then you’ll have an easier time setting aside differences and finding peace in the middle. Here’s to the Irish, where peace is found between green and orange! Brewed with Chestnut Ridge Brazilian decaf coffee beans that we soaked in Irish whiskey, plus a touch of Irish cream for a rich, smooth, well-rounded flavor!

  • Grist Millsner

    Pilsner – 4.7% ABV

This classic pilsner recipe has a balanced hops bite and low abv, making for a smooth and easy drink. Grist Millsner is a tribute to our classic building, which started as a grist mill, as part of Elkton Milling Company, way back in 1890.

  • Helles Or High Water

    Helles Lager – 6.3% ABV

Appropriately tapped in during a hurricane, Helles Or High Water is ready for you to dive in (to drinking the beer, not hurricane flood water)! Elkton, being a river town, has seen its fair share of floods. Many locals especially recall the flooding of 1996, where the rising waters broke the banks of the Shenandoah and put much of the town under water. Come Helles or high water, you’ll have a friendlier liquid companion in here than out in the storm. This delicious and crushable German Lager has a solid malt backbone with a subtle hint of sweetness that is well balanced with hops!

  • Heritage

    Vienna Lager – 5.2% ABV

This Vienna Lager is smooth, crisp, malt-balanced, and delicious. It is everything we hoped it would be. Much like Elkton and the Shenandoah Valley was to our family when they decided to settle here. Our family origins go back to Austria, home of the Vienna Lager. The first batch of our family came across the ocean in the early 1900’s, and our grandfather was born shortly after that arrival - becoming the first American-born of our family. To celebrate their new citizenship in this country, our ancestors brewed their own beers and enjoyed them together. This brewery is a continuation of that heritage, and this particular beer is a celebration of that heritage. Here’s to the immigrant heritage that we all share, which ultimately led us to this slice of paradise known as the Shenandoah Valley.

  • Hidden Chimneys

    Smoked Helles - 6.9% ABV

Have you ever gone up into Shenandoah National Park and noticed random chimneys out in the middle of the woods? True locals know and retell the story behind those chimneys, but the government would probably rather we forget. This smooth beer was brewed with a light and balanced dose of beechwood smoked malt to give it a subtle smoke aroma and finish on the flavor profile to serve as a subtle reminder of this story. Many families were chased out of their mountain homes, which the feds burned to the ground (along with churches and schoolhouses) to prevent the people from coming back. After the smoke cleared and the ash settled, all that remained were the stone chimneys. That smoke may have blown away long ago, but if you get close enough to those chimneys, you might still smell the lingering smoke of tyranny. As you sip this uniquely refreshing beer, take in the smoke and take in this story and raise a glass to the resilience of the local folks!

  • Hiking Hrafna

    Icelandic Witbier – 6.2% ABV

Hrafna-Floki was the Viking who ran up a mountain, saw a fjord full of glaciers, and gave Iceland its name. In the same spirit of adventure, this Icelandic Witbier, brewed with coriander and orange peel, is perfect fuel for your inner Viking. To AT through-hikers and weekend SNP trail warriors pretending to have Viking heritage, cheers to your inner Viking!

  • Hobby Robby

    Cream Ale – 5.7% ABV

This beer’s name has been waiting for the right beer to come along for the last few years, and we think we’ve finally matched it up with the right beer. Contrary to what you may think, a cream ale does not have cream in it, but rather gets its name from the “cream of corn” sweetness that is characteristic of the style’s corn based mash bill. It is light, clean, crisp, and quite refreshing! Anyone who has lived in Elkton long enough knows the name “Hobby Robinson.” He was a standout character who was well known in Elkton and beyond for many decades. He was known for many things, not the least of which include his high moral integrity and his caring spirit for the people in his community. He served as a photographer in World War 2. After the war he combined his passion for photography and writing to create many books, most of which were all about the people in his community. He was a local historian who kept alive many local folks’ stories that otherwise would have been forgotten. He was the cream of the crop, and a refreshing breath of fresh air. Our hope is that we do him justice by upholding his legacy of telling our community’s stories by way of naming our beers after them. Cheers to Elkton’s cream of the crop: cheers to Hobby Robby!

  • Holler Bock

    Weizenbock – 8% ABV

Using Hallertauer (pronounced “holler-tower”) Mittelfrueh Hops, Vienna and Pilsen malt, and Weihenstephaner yeast, this true German Weizenbock – brewed in true German style – has strong flavor notes of banana and soft wheat. Our local hollows (or “hollers” if you’re from around here) have a history of family feuds and fights that rival the Hatfields and McCoys. Most of those families get along just fine now (they’re at least not shooting at each other). So, in the spirit of burying the hatchet, this strong, smooth and tasty Weizenbock is the perfect beer for old foes to clink their pints together and invite each other to “Holler Bock.”

  • Honey Bear

Honey Blonde Ale – 6.5% ABV

Using our popular “Blonde Bear” recipe as the base, we added honey to sweeten it and make it even more refreshing. If you enjoy our blonde bear, then you are sure to enjoy this version of it! Honey and bears just go hand in hand!

  • Hoof Dunker

Chocolate Peanut Butter Imperial Stout - 10.5% ABV

Anyone who has worked on a small farm knows the woes of early morning milking. Often, the farmer will wake before the sun rises, set the pale under the udders and get to pulling, only to have ol’ Bessie stomp in the bucket! We’d like to think she was just trying to make a special chocolate milk of sorts for her beloved milk master. This rich and heavy imperial milk stout is bursting with peanut butter flavor and dark chocolate undertones, with a robust roasted malt backbone that would make ol’ Bessie proud! But, like the cool morning whip to the face from her tail, this stout will knock you over if you aren’t careful!

  • Hop To The Front

    Local Wet-Hops IPA - 5.6% ABV

We took our delicious “Front Line Fuel” IPA recipe and used it as the base for this one, but then we did something a little different. Instead of using dried hops or pelletized hops, we used 100% wet hops cones straight off the vines from local Running Cedar Hopyard. Because of this change, this one comes out as super mellow on the hops flavor, much more malt-forward, and very smooth with a low IBU rating. This beer offers tribute to the Shenandoah Valley’s history as being the “breadbasket of the Confederacy” during the Civil War, where local crops were a primary source of food for those on the front lines. Additionally, this is a tribute to the local growers who have been producing rich crops for hundreds of years, which fuel those on the front lines both near and far.

  • Iti Wapiti

New Zealand IPA - 6.8% ABV

This delicious NZ IPA is not fruited and is brewed with only one hops, just like our popular “Pepi Wapiti,” which was brewed exclusively using Nelson Sauvin hops. This one was 100% brewed with Nectaron hops, which have a subtly sweet tropical aroma and a well balanced bitterness on the finish. “Iti Wapiti,” translated to “little elk” in the native NZ Maori language, is a fitting name for a lighter NZ IPA than most of our previous versions. This is a delicious IPA, perfectly suited for the warming Spring weather!

  • KeyTuley Pie

Key Lime + Vanilla + Graham Cracker Gose – 6% ABV

This flavorful and crisp Gose is like drinking a delicious key lime pie. A tart and limey start with a smooth graham cracker vanilla finish. A sour memory deserves a sour beer.

  • Kilt By A Bar

Smoked Scotch Ale - 6.6% ABV

This delicious amber scotch ale has a well-balanced mix of malt, with cherry wood smoked barley, giving it a smooth and authentic smoky flavor. It is smoky but very approachable and easy to drink. Depending on where you are from, this beer’s name could mean a bunch of things. It could simply be referring to someone wearing a traditional Scottish kilt at the bar. Or if you’re from Elkton, it could be how you say “killed by a bear.” While there are no documented cases of a person being killed by a bear around these parts, drinking this beer may summon a deep highlander spirit within you, whereby you throw on a kilt and charge into the Blue Ridge looking for a fight - at which point that statistic may change!

  • Lagerfeuer – (Elktoberfest!)

Rauchbier (German Smoke Beer) – 6.4% ABV

German for “Campfire,” which is especially appropriate for this beer considering most people who taste it say, “wow! It tastes like a campfire!” The combination of cherry wood AND beech wood smoked barley bring out a rich smoky flavor that subsides to give birth to a smooth malty finish. Much like a campfire in our Blue Ridge Mountains often leads to rich stories and fond memories!

  • Lawn Party Hill

Pumpkin Pie + Vanilla Cream Ale - 6.3% ABV

This beer is special for a number of reasons. Let’s go through the layers, shall we?… First off, it is appropriately being tapped in just in time for Elkton’s Autumn Days festival, which takes place right on and along what used to be known as “Lawn Party Hill.” This hill also happens to be the building site for the town’s new proposed pavilion/farmers market/amphitheater/etc.. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this beer go to the town as a contribution towards that goal! Help us help the town to build this great community space! Additionally, the base recipe for this beer is our delicious and popular “Hobby Robby” cream ale, named after Hobby Robinson. Ironically, Lawn Party Hill was once the site of a WWII watch tower, where community members rotated shifts day and night during the war to watch for enemy planes, while Hobby himself was an aviation photographer in the Navy during the war. Lastly, who isn’t in the mood for pumpkin beer this time of year?? This is smooth, crisp, and delicious - full of seasonal flavor! Come get some!

  • Lithia Farm

Lithuanian Farmhouse Ale – 6.0% ABV

This delicious farmhouse ale, whose flavor profile is right at home among saisons, is a twofold tribute to Elkton’s first farm/settlement and to the amazing spring on that farm. Bear Lithia Spring has been putting our millions of gallons of natural lithia infused water for centuries, which has been a rich resource for life and health for endless generations - from early indigenous Native Americans, to the first settlers, to pharmacies that used to bottle and sell it as “medicinal water,” to our brew cellar, where we use its unrivaled goodness to brew every one of our beers! You might say our beer is “medicinal” as a result (at least you can tell yourself that if it makes you feel any better). With every beer you drink here, you are taking in a little bit of local history. Cheers to the spring that made this place what it is today by being the perfect spot to settle.

  • Lithia Fruit

Guava + Passion Fruit + Feijoa Lithuanian Farmhouse Ale – 7.0% ABV

Our favorite local spring, Bear Lithia, has been an endlessly fruitful giver of incredible water. We use this spring for EVERY BEER WE BREW! As a small tribute to this remarkable spring, we give you this unique and creative beer (as the 4th variation of the “Lithia Fruit” line of beers), which takes the quality of water born of Bear Lithia Spring and magnifies it with a medley of ingredients from all over the world. Flavored with strawberry, mint, and lime, dry-hopped with galaxy hops, and Lithuanian Farmhouse yeast, this one is a treat for your taste buds.

  • Mahanga Wapiti

New Zealand DIPA – 8.6% ABV

It has been a while since we’ve released a new beer in our New Zealand IPA “Wapiti” series! Here’s the next one in the lineup! This is a double IPA version of our popular “Pepi Wapiti” NZ IPA. Brewed with only one hops – Nelson Sauvin – which shares some aroma and flavor characteristics with Sauvignon Blanc wines. “Mahanga Wapiti,” translates to “Twin Elk” in the native New Zealand Maori language. Like Pepi times two! Because one Pepi isn’t enough, especially given our shortage (complete lack) of local elk these days.

  • ManGos Tuley

Passion Fruit + Pineapple + Mango GOSE – 6% ABV

Like “Purgatuley,” the base recipe for this beer is “Gose Tuley,” named after Colonel Gos Tuley, who was responsible for killing the last known indigenous Virginia Elk in 1855 just North of us. That very elk is still on display at the Smithsonian today. We’ll take living and free elk over an old dead one any day! This batch was fruited with passion fruit, pineapple, and mango (plus the style-specific sea salt and coriander) for a deliciously tart and juicy Gose! Another sour beer for that sour memory.

  • Matamua Wapiti

New Zealand IPA - 6.5% ABV

”Matamua Wapiti” is Maori (native New Zealand language) for “Firstborn Elk.” This recipe is a variant of our popular “Pepi Wapiti” NZIPA, but with a different grain bill. We used the same Nelson Sauvin Hops, which are full of tropical flavor - with hints of Sauvignon Blanc grapes. This beer is a special in-house tribute to our brew-brother Aaron’s firstborn son, who was born the week before we tapped this beer in. Welcome to the EBC fam, Matamua!

  • Mercky Drainage

    IPA - 6.4% ABV

Another “Mercky” IPA to add to the collection! Be careful what you pour down the drain! All drains lead somewhere… If it doesn’t belong in the water, don’t put it in the water. In this case, we take pure and undefiled Bear Lithia Spring water and only put good stuff in it. Brewed with Centennial, Citra, and Vic Secret hops for yet another refreshing and crushable single IPA.

  • Mercky Dribble

    IPA - 6.5% ABV

Another beer in our “Mercky” IPA series! This one is a low IBU, juicy, easy drinker! Any amount of pollution in our beautiful Shenandoah river is bad, but a dribble would have been less bad, thus the slightly less bitter flavor compared to many of our Mercky IPA’s. Here’s to keeping bad stuff out of our water!

  • Mercky Flood

    Triple IPA - 10.5% ABV

Every now and then, the Shenandoah will spill over its edges and go places it isn't wanted. Perhaps this is the river's way of trying to shed some of those unwanted "Mercky" contaminants from itself. Either way, that dense, cloudy, thick water brings to mind this equally dense and cloudy Triple IPA. We crafted this beer using Amarillo hops, El Dorado hops, and BRU-1 as the primary hops. All of the hops we used in this one are lupomax hops - which translates to more densely packed hoppy flavor for you! One of the juiciest IPA's we've ever brewed with the highest ABV we've ever had in an IPA, this one is not to be underestimated - much like the flood waters of the Shenandoah. Don't jump in unless you're ready for a wild ride!

  • Mercky Leak

    Hazy IPA - 6.5% ABV

Brewed with 100% Alora Hops, which is a newer hops variety that hasn’t been brewed with by many yet. We wanted to experiment a little with these hops, so we used a lighter version of our flagship DIPA, Mercky Water, and hopped the heck out of it with Alora. The results are very pleasing. This IPA is hazy, with subtle sweet melon and peach undertones, balanced with a low IBU finish. It is a very crushable hazy IPA. When experimenting, it is always important to ensure nothing leaks out. Unless we’re talking about a leak of information - especially regarding intentional dumping in our river… Because that would be irresponsible.

  • Mercky Mollusk

    Oyster Stout – 5.5% ABV

Since we can’t eat anything from our local Shenandoah River - because of the “Mercky” water - we have to go a little further away to get our mollusks. This delicious and mild oyster stout was brewed with same-day fresh oysters from the Chesapeake Bay! We went a little light on the roasted malt to let the sweet oyster liquor come through. This made for a deliciously smooth, well rounded and well balanced stout!

  • Mercky River

    Triple IPA – 10% ABV

A new IPA addition to our “Mercky” series! We used Norwegian Kveik yeast and dry-hopped an experimental Australian hops to creatively shape this one into the juicy and smooth, low IBU beer that it is! We are all about experimenting, unless the experimentation ends with dumping things in our river…

  • Mercky Runoff

New England Pale Ale – 5.8% ABV

A smooth balance of Citra hops and El Dorado hops. This is like a trickled down version of our popular “Mercky Water” DIPA – “runoff,” if you will. A light alternative for IPA-drinkers.

  • Mercky Runoff 2

    IPA – 6% ABV

A smooth balance of Citra hops and El Dorado hops. This is like a trickled down version of our popular “Mercky Water” DIPA – “runoff,” if you will. A light, crisp, and hoppy IPA, with a well-restrained bitterness. Made for drinking – not for dumping in the river.

  • Mercky Sour

A delicious blend of Mercky Water + our kettle sour. Brings out unique flavor attributes of each beer.

  • Mercky Stream

    Mango IPA – 6.5% ABV

Water spreads, so be careful what you put in it! Some people put nasty things in the water, but we only put the good stuff in ours! We put mango in this IPA to give it a deliciously tropical aroma and juicy mouth-feel! Balanced with Citra and Azacca hops, this IPA is a smooth and refreshing drink. Good ingredients in good water.

  • Mercky Trickle

    IPA - 6.3% ABV

Another solid IPA in the “Mercky” series of beers! Careful what you put in the water. Everything trickles down… When referring to the river, this can be a bad thing. But when the goodness of our “Mercky Water” flagship DIPA trickles down into a fresh new brew like this one, THEN it is a good thing! Brewed with Cascade, Mosaic Lupomax, and Strata hops for a refreshing and crushable single IPA.

  • Mercky Water

    Double IPA – 8.0% ABV

Just the right balance of hops and restrained bitterness offers a tribute to the Shenandoah River’s murky history (especially the restrained bitterness part). Careful what you put in the water!

  • Mercky Waterfall

    DIPA (Mango/Vanilla) – 8% ABV

Our beloved “Mercky Water” got a makeover! Finished off with Mango and Vanilla for a smooth and tasty “why not?” Just the right balance of citra hops, sweetness, and restrained bitterness offers a tribute to the Shenandoah River’s murky history (especially the restrained bitterness part).

  • Miller Corn

American Corn Lager – 5.6% ABV

A ‘LITE,’ smooth, crushable, low IBU corn lager! Brewed with German Pilsner Malt, which offers tribute to the Miller (formerly “Mueller”) family, who were the first European permanent settlers in the Shenandoah Valley (1727). In 1858 Colonel Henry Miller of the Elkton area invented and patented a corn harvester. In the same inventive spirit, we used about 80% corn in this beer’s mash bill.

  • Miller Corn LIME

American Corn Lager – 5.8% ABV

A ‘LITE,’ smooth, crushable, low IBU corn lager! Brewed with German Pilsner Malt, which offers tribute to the Miller (formerly “Mueller”) family, who were the first European permanent settlers in the Shenandoah Valley (1727). In 1858 Colonel Henry Miller of the Elkton area invented and patented a corn harvester. In the same inventive spirit, we used about 80% corn in this beer’s mash bill. This particular batch has a pleasant twist of lime added for boosted refreshment during these hot summer months!

  • Miller Kite

    International Lager – 5.6% ABV

A ‘LITE,’ smooth, crushable, low IBU lager! This is a great option for people who enjoy big-name domestic beers. No particular brand comes to mind, but MILLER LLL-er-KITE is a delicious alternative! Brewed with German Pilsner Malt, which offers tribute to Adam Miller (formerly “Mueller”), who is recognized as the first European permanent settler in the Shenandoah Valley (1727), who settled right here in what would someday be called ‘Elkton.’ His family name is deeply rooted in our town. In fact, the Miller-Kite House, the namesake for this beer, is a historic museum here in town (named after his family).

  • Miller Limeapple

American Corn Lager + Lime + Pineapple – 5% ABV

A ‘LITE,’ smooth, crushable, low IBU corn lager! Brewed with German Pilsner Malt, which offers tribute to the Miller (formerly “Mueller”) family, who were the first European permanent settlers in the Shenandoah Valley (1727). In 1858 Colonel Henry Miller of the Elkton area invented and patented a corn harvester. In the same inventive spirit, we used about 80% corn in this beer’s mash bill. This particular batch has a pleasant twist of lime and pineapple added for boosted refreshment during these hot summer months!

  • Mulino

Italian Pilsner (hazy) – 5.9% ABV

Ciao signoras e signores! ”Mulino” is Italian for “Grist Mill.” Our first pilsner was named “Grist Millsner,” as a tribute to our historic building, which operated as a grist (or grain) mill from 1890 until the 1970’s. In the same track, this hazy Italian pilsner offers the same tribute, but with an Italian twist to it! Soak up the last little bit of the Summer with Mulino! Dry-hopped, as is the Italian tradition for the style, crisp in flavor, with flavor notes reminiscent of berries and white wine grapes.

  • Müller Heimat

    German IPA - 5.5% ABV

The first permanent settler of the Shenandoah Valley was Adam Müller (later changed to the more American “Miller”). He was born in Germany around 1700, and immigrated to America. He originally settled around Lancaster, Pennsylvania, but heard that Virginia was better (well, duh!) so he went down to give it a look-see. He met some members of the Spotswood expedition in Williamsburg who told him of the beautiful valley hiding over the Blue Ridge Mountains, so he went to see for himself, and sure enough he fell in love with what he found. How could he not?! He followed Spotswood’s original route and found a permanent home right here, in what would someday become home to many.

  • Nekid Crik

    Kolsch – 5.25% ABV

Known as “Naked Creek” to non-locals, this smooth and malty beer is hazy and rich in flavor. It is refreshing and light, like the color of the unclothed regions of backwoods folks skinny dipping in Naked Creek!

  • Nekid Viking

    Nordic Kolsch – 6.5% ABV

We put a traditional Nordic spin on the base recipe of our popular “Nekid Crik” Kolsch, using whole juniper branches (needles and all) and juniper berries in the mash tank to create this unique beer. We’re not sure where Naked Creek got its name, but it isn’t hard to imagine burley, bearded individuals sporting their birthday suits for a dip in Nekid Crik. Throw in a longboat and a broadsword, and the package is complete.

  • Odell's Tiger

Blood Orange Blonde Ale - 5.2% ABV

We don’t need to get into his complex local notoriety, but Odell had tigers. This exotic beer will be short lived, much like Odell’s tigers. It is a refreshing tribute to the beautiful beasts that lived in captivity here in Elkton some years ago. Toast to those tigers, whose fate is unknown! This delicious, crushable, flagship recipe is a crowd pleaser! It is refreshing and bursting with orange flavor! Catch Odell’s Tiger by the tail, we guarantee you it will be an exciting experience!

  • Ol' Buck

    Baltic Porter - 9% ABV

We’ve been waiting for the right strong and bold beer to name after Herman Zetty’s horse, “Old Buck.” This one fits the bill! Herman rode Ol’ Buck everywhere he went in the early to mid 1900’s. Ol’ Buck carried Herman to the theater to see that western flick where Herman got a little trigger happy and drew his six-shooter out to shoot the screen in an attempt to take out the bandits. It takes a strong horse to handle a character like Herman Zetty. Ol’ Buck was notorious for strolling right into the old Bear Pharmacy - with Herman on his back - where Herman would demand, “I need a coke for Ol’ Buck!” This beer is full of strong and robust flavor - with distinctive malt aromas of caramelized sugars, licorice, and subtle notes of chocolate. If you’re up for a wild ride, then hop on Ol’ Buck! But if you’re not careful, you may get bucked off!

  • Older Spotswood

Rye Barrel Aged English Old Ale – 10% ABV

In 2020, a year chocked full of major lowlights, one of the highlights for our family (apart from opening the brewery) was the bottling of our private family reserve Virginia straight rye whiskey from Ragged Branch Distillery (owned/founded by a relative of our family). Very few people are privileged enough to taste that pure, uncut, “Napotnik Reserve” whiskey. To make up for withholding the bottles, we bring you the barrel! We took that hand-selected family-reserve barrel and aged our popular “Old Spotswood” English old ale in it for five months. You will taste smooth notes of that rye goodness throughout the molasses-rich old ale that we’ve all come to love.

  • Old Ragsacker

Vanilla Triple IPA - 9.5% ABV

Old Rag in Shenandoah National Park, draws people from all over the world to “hike” it (if you’ve done it, then you know why the word “hike” is in quotes). It is a beautiful mountain with refreshing open air exposure and expansive views, but it packs a punch. Just like Old Rag, don’t underestimate this beer or you will end up on all fours. It may be crisp and refreshing in flavor, but it too packs a punch! Brewed with Barbe-Rouge hops (France), Belma hops (Washington State), and Huell-Melon hops (Germany). Don’t let the smooth, crisp, creamy, crushable flavor fool you. This is dangerously easy to drink for a 9.5% triple IPA. Similar to our Rugsacker series of NEIPA’s: mild sweetness, with smooth creamy vanilla flavor, and very little hops bitterness.

  • Old Spotswood

English Old Ale – 8.5% ABV

Some might fault him for being loyal to England, but times were different back then. And we’d like to think that he was always an American at heart (at least a Virginian!). This beer is a tribute to the olden days and to the heart of exploration which led Old Al to the valley! Loosely influenced by one of George Washington’s old beer recipes, with molasses for some unique sweetness and rich malty flavor.

  • Papaatua Wapiti

    NZ IPA - 7.5% ABV

The next beer in our New Zealand “Wapiti” IPA series! Papaatua Wapiti” is Maori (native NZ language) for “Godfather Elk.” this SINGLE IPA is not fruited and is brewed with only one hops – Nelson Sauvin – which shares some aroma and flavor characteristics with Sauvignon Blanc wines. The name of this one is a tip of the hat to the official godfather of National Beer Day who visited us when we had this beer’s predecessor on tap (in which we also exclusively used Nelson Sauvin hops). He said it was one of the best IPA’s he’d ever had. We took that as a tremendous compliment, so we decided to brew a slightly more robust version of that delicious IPA. Cheers to the godfather of National Beer Day! (For a historic, more in depth backstory of this line of beers’ names, refer to our “Wapiti Mimi” description in our “Tap History” page.)

  • Pepi Wapiti

New Zealand IPA – 7% ABV

Another NZ IPA, but unlike its predecessors, this SINGLE IPA is not fruited and is brewed with only one hops – Nelson Sauvin – which shares some aroma and flavor characteristics with Sauvignon Blanc wines. “Pepi Wapiti,” translated to “baby elk” in the native NZ Maori language, is a fitting name for a lighter NZ IPA than our previous version, “Wapiti Kakano,” which means “elk seed.” You can’t get a baby elk without the elk seed…

  • PinePippin Sour

    Kettle Sour – 5.3% ABV

“Pippin” is synonymous with “apple” around here, but you probably won’t come across any pineapples growing locally. So we are making pineapples local with this sour! Get your tropical fix with this well balanced, refreshing and delicious sour!

  • Polar Bear

Cranberry + Orange + Cinnamon Blonde Ale - 5.2% ABV

When one thinks of Elkton, Virginia, polar bears don’t come to mind (much like lions and tigers and ostriches). But to anyone who knows anything about Elkton’s wild stories, it might not be hard to believe that a polar bear once called Elkton home. And no, there was never a zoo in Elkton. One day, an ostrich stepped too close to the polar bear’s cage and was pulled through the bars, and the polar bear feasted. This may be the only time in world history where a polar bear ate an ostrich - here in little ol’ Elkton, VA… In remembrance of Elkton’s polar bear (and that poor ostrich), we bring you this delicious and refreshing seasonal blonde Ale, fruited with cranberry and orange, plus cinnamon, as the perfect beer to pair with your own Christmas feast. You may not be eating ostrich for dinner, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy something unique!

  • Primate Pounder

    Rum Barrel Aged Stout (+Chocolate +Peanut Butter +Banana) – 10.6% ABV

We took our popular chocolate/peanut-butter/banana stout, “Primate Puncher,” and aged it in a Jamaican rum barrel to bring you this rendition of that popular beer! Rich and complex flavor with a rich and complex backstory. Back in 1950’s Elkton there was a carnival set up where the stoutest farmers and backwoodsmen would pay to get in a large cage with a 67 pound chimpanzee for a chance to win $5/second (a lot of money back then) for as long as they could pin it down. Suffice to say, nobody ever won any money, but plenty of people got beat up by the chimp – some seriously hurt. After a while, the county shut things down because it was inhumane. This caused some confusion among the locals – who asked, “inhumane to whom?” That 67 pound chimp gave out plenty of poundings before his county-enforced retirement. Here’s to Elkton’s undefeated cage fighter!

  • Primate Puncher

    Chocolate, Peanut-Butter, Banana STOUT – 8.5% ABV

Rich and complex flavor with a rich and complex backstory. • Pumpkin Tuleesecake

Pumpkin Pie + Cheesecake Gose - 6.8% ABV

Another “Tuleesecake” for the win! This uniquely delicious gose is bursting with flavors! It is tart and sour, and well balanced with pumpkin pie spices, cheesecake creaminess, and hints of vanilla. In 1855, Colonel Gos Tuley (the namesake for our base Gose recipe, “Gose Tuley”) was responsible for killing the last known indigenous Virginia Elk just North of us. That very elk is still on display at the Smithsonian today. Fast forward about 170 years, and many of us would probably have preferred Gos Tuley be stuffed and put on display instead. Either way, this sour beer is the perfect beer to serve as a memorial to that sour memory.

  • Purgatuley

    Pineapple + Feijoa GOSE – 5.8% ABV

The base recipe for this beer is “Gose Tuley,” named after Colonel Gos Tuley, who was responsible for killing the last known indigenous Virginia Elk in 1855 just North of us. That very elk is still on display at the Smithsonian today. We fruited this Gose with pineapple and feijoa, a common fruit of New Zealand (which we have used in a couple of our popular NZ IPA’s). The Shenandoah Valley was once a paradise for elk - a heaven. There are current efforts to reintroduce elk to Virginia, but until then the majestic creatures are stuck in a purgatory, awaiting their time to be released back into the valley!

  • Raspy Bear

Raspberry Blonde Ale – 5.9% ABV

You’ve had Blonde Bear, Blue Bear, Black Bear, Polar Bear, and Odell’s Tiger - all delicious versions of our blonde ale recipe. Now introducing Raspy Bear, another delicious, light and fruity blonde ale for your Summer refreshment! This smooth and crushable raspberry blonde ale makes for excellent liquid replenishment after you’ve outrun a Blue Ridge Mountain bear with your fresh-picked loot of wild raspberries. So, when you’ve gone raspy voiced from shouting “HEY BEAR,” to no avail before you decide to get running, come on in and lubricate your vocal cords with Raspy Bear!

  • Rauchiger Bär

Rauchweizen (Smoked Wheat Beer) - 5.6% ABV

”Rauchiger Bär” is German for “Smokey Bear,” which is a very fitting name for this beer. This smoke-forward wheat beer definitely packs a unique flavor profile for your taste buds! Did you know that nearly 90% of forest fires are caused by humans? Our brewery sits at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah National Park. We love our mountains, so take good care of them! Remember - Only you can prevent forest fires!

  • Red Brush

    Red Ale - 5% ABV

This beer is the only beer we’ve been able to brew with 100% Virginia grown malt! Combine that with our local Bear Lithia Springs water, with a low ABV, and you have a pretty hard to beat session beer! Crisp and malt-forward, with hints of smoky roasted malt, and a beautiful dark red/amber color. Red Brush starts at Bear Lithia Springs, and winds its way all the way to our beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Cruising down that road gives you a proper taste of Virginia’s beauty. Drink up Red Brush, and taste Virginia!

  • Red Brush Fire

Red Ale – 5.8% ABVThis beer was brewed with 100% Virginia grown malt! Combine that with our local Bear Lithia Springs water, and you have a pretty hard to beat beer! Crisp and malt-forward, with hints of smoky roasted malt, and a beautiful dark red/amber color. Red Brush Rd starts at Bear Lithia Springs, and winds its way all the way to our beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Cruising down that road gives you a proper taste of Virginia’s beauty. Drink up Red Brush Fire, and taste Virginia! The base recipe for this beer was “Red Brush,” while this one refers to the brush fire that started along Red Brush Road back in 2016.

  • Reddish Knob

    Red Lager – 4.7% ABV

Smooth, refreshing, and smoky, like a campfire on Reddish Knob. Everyone goes up to Reddish for different reasons, but we all drink Reddish for the same reason.

  • Reka Wapiti

New Zealand IPA - 6.5% ABV

Another NZ IPA for the books! This super hazy, super crushable NZ IPA is smooth and full bodied! Using 100% Nelson Sauvin hops, which shares some aroma and flavor characteristics with Sauvignon Blanc wine grapes, this makes for a unique hops flavor experience. This recipe is very similar to our delicious “Pepi Wapiti” NZ IPA, but this one is more concentrated. “Reka Wapiti” means “Sweet Elk” in Maori, the native NZ language. Did you know in the early 1900’s Teddy Roosevelt gifted a bunch of American Elk to New Zealand? They are still roaming the hills of New Zealand to this day! We always wondered where all our native Elkton elk went. Now we know… Now we know… How sweet it is to have elk roaming freely through the hills.

  • River Millsner

Czech Farmhouse Pilsner – 5.8% ABV

This is only the second pilsner we’ve ever brewed. The first, “Grist Millsner,” was a tribute to our building, which was originally built as a grain mill for Elkton Milling Company in 1890. This more exotic rendition of a pilsner is a tribute to the lesser known, long forgotten by many, river mill. The old river mill ruins are hidden in the trees near the bridge, just a half mile away from our taproom. This rendition of a pilsner has a farmhouse yeast in it, which gives it a very unique flavor profile. It starts similar to a Hefeweizen, but it finishes like a classic light pilsner. Easy to drink and refreshing!

  • Rocky Bar Rhubarb

    Kettle Sour – 5.3% ABV

This strawberry and rhubarb sour is a delicious, tart, well-balanced and refreshing beer! A unique mixture offers tribute to the many unique, often hard to believe, stories that have come out of Rocky Bar. If you’ve been around Elkton long enough, chances are you have some of your own RB stories to share.

  • Rockytop Raspberry

Raspberry Wheat Beer - 6.5% ABV

Looking for a refreshing blast of raspberry goodness?! Look no further! Wild, native Virginia raspberries can be found scattered all throughout our local backwoods and Blue Ridge Mountains. Like mixing freshly foraged mountain raspberries with a cool blast of wind high up on the nearby summit of Rockytop, this beer will leave you feeling refreshed and wanting more.

  • RugSacker

    Triple NEIPA – 9.5% ABV – 34 IBU

After the ashes settled from Sheridan’s Raid and it seemed the fight against the Yankees in the valley was over, then came the RugSackers, and a different kind of war began. This one takes our popular “Sheridan’s Raid” DNEIPA up a notch. A bit less bitter, subtly smooth and fruity, but longer lasting influence.

  • RugSacker Light

Double NEIPA (hazy) – 8.5% ABV

“LIGHT” because the earlier batches of RugSacker were around 10%.

  • RugShaker

Double NEIPA (Milkshake IPA) – 8% ABV

After the “RugSackers” came and exploited the downtrodden economy of the South, we were able to shake our rugs clean of their opportunistic foot dust and move on. Our brewing kettles caught some of that dust for this beer, giving it a lovely haze and hint of bitterness, keeping the memory alive. Brewed with Citra and Azacca hops, finished off with lactose, and naturally carbonated for a creamy, sweet, juicy and delicious flavor.

  • Schrotmühle – (Elktoberfest!)

    Doppelbock – 8.4% ABV

A strong, dark, malt-forward German beer. What else needs to be said? Well, perhaps we should say the name isn’t anything weird or inappropriate – it is German for “Grain Mill.” Given that this beer required the most grain-grinding of all our Elktoberfest beers, it is well suited to serve as a tribute to our building, which used to be a grain mill.

  • Shandy Bottom

Take your pick of our Blonde Bear or Grist Millsner and let us make you a shandy! We mix it 50/50 with ginger ale for a refreshing and delicious taste.

  • ShenanDark

Irish NITRO Stout – 4.7% ABV

This stout spawned from our popular flagship oatmeal porter, “ShenandOats,” which is our oldest recipe - developed by brother August nearly two decades ago. For this beer, we traded the oats for extra roasted malt to give it a darker, deeper, roastier flavor profile. Then we hooked it up to our nitro tap to round it off with that smooth nitro texture, which is perfectly befitting of this beer. Here’s to Shenandoah Valley home-brews! You never know where they will end up - whether down the drain or becoming a menu item at a future craft brewery, keep on brewing!

  • ShenanDeluge

Dry Irish Chocolate Stout – 6% ABV

The peaceful Shenandoah River has a history of intense deluges. While those brown water days may look like an alluring abundance of chocolate milk flowing everywhere, it ain’t no Willy Wonka chocolate river and you do not want to take a drink - much less fall into the deceptively deep dark depths. However, feel free to dive into the deep dark depths of ShenanDeluge, and it will sweep you away in a different way! It has pleasantly rich dark chocolate undertones, well balanced with dry roasted malt flavor.

  • Shenadore

West Coast IPA – 6% ABV

What local doesn’t miss the Shenandoah Valley when they travel away? The old song, “Oh Shenandoah,” was a popular song with frontier settlers and explorers who traveled westward. It was about longing to return to the beautiful and peaceful Shenandoah Valley. The further away from the valley they would travel, the more chaotic and uncertain life became. The song was originally called “Shenadore,” until someone who clearly were'n’t from this here Shenadore Valley done come along and made it all proper like. Mild sweetness as a reminder of home, and a solid hops bitterness that comes with leaving, make for a well rounded IPA. Brewed with Cascade, Centennial, and Citra hops.

  • Shenadore 2

West Coast IPA - 7.5% ABV

What local doesn’t miss the Shenandoah Valley when they travel away? The old song, “Oh Shenandoah,” was a popular song with frontier settlers and explorers who traveled westward. It was about longing to return to the beautiful and peaceful Shenandoah Valley. The further away from the valley they would travel, the more chaotic and uncertain life became. Mild sweetness as a reminder of home, and a solid hops bitterness that comes with leaving, make for a well rounded IPA. Brewed with Cascade, Centennial, and Citra hops. This second batch is a little bit higher ABV, yet more clean and crisp in flavor!

  • ShenandOats

    Oatmeal Porter – 5.5% ABV

Strong will. Strong flavor. On it’s way to becoming an oatmeal stout, this one decided it wanted to be a porter instead. Don’t tell a Shenandoan what to do! This porter goes down smooth, with deliciously smooth roasted malt flavor. This is our oldest beer recipe - developed by our brewer August many years before we started up here!

  • Sheridan's Blood

New England DIPA - 8% ABV

Our very first NE IPA was “Sheridan’s Raid,” brewed with 100% citrus hops for a juicy, citrusy, hazy flavor profile. It had a sharp grapefruit-like bitterness on the finish, which was a jab at that dirty old barn burning yankee who came down into our valley during the Civil War. This batch is fruited with blood orange, upping that delicious citrusy flavor! Back in the 1860’s, valley folks wanted Sheridan’s blood. Now you can want Sheridan’s Blood too! …But for different reasons.

  • Sheridan's Onslaught

    Triple NEIPA – 9.5% ABV

Our popular NEIPA’s name, “Sheridan’s Raid,” didn’t quite capture how valley folks really felt about what Sheridan did. This one evokes stronger feelings (in more than one way). It wasn’t simply a “raid.” It was an onslaught! Just saying it like it is. Heavily hopped in every phase of brewing with Citra and Citra Lupomax, and triple dry hopped. Juicy, Hoppy, yummy.

  • Sheridan's Onslaught 2

Triple New England IPA – 10.5% ABV

Our popular NEIPA’s name, “Sheridan’s Raid,” didn’t quite capture how valley folks really felt about what Sheridan did. This one evokes stronger feelings (in more than one way). It wasn’t simply a “raid.” It was an onslaught! Just saying it like it is. Heavily hopped in every phase of brewing with Citra and Citra Lupomax, and triple dry hopped. It is juicy, hoppy, yummy, and packs quite a punch - much like the dirty back-stabbing tactics of Sheridan!

  • Sheridan's Grant

    NE DIPA - 8.1% ABV

Valley folks have bitter feelings about Sheridan. Our popular 100% Citra Hops NEIPA, “Sheridan’s Raid,” is about that memory. This one goes a bit deeper, and houses a bit more bitterness, as it goes closer to the source of the enactment of those awful, total war tactics. General Grant ordered Sheridan to wreck the valley. In his exact order to Sheridan, Grant wrote, “nothing should be left to invite the enemy to return.” Sheridan and his men scorched every farm they encountered and shot the livestock. This move literally hit too close to home for Valley soldiers, whose families struggled to survive in the wake of Grant’s order. This beer is brewed with 100% BRU-1 Hops, with a more concentrated hops bitterness than Sheridan’s Raid. Sheridan was a jerk, but he was just following orders, right?

  • Sheridan's Raid

New England IPA – 7.1% ABV

He brought 50,000 Yankees into the Valley to burn our barns. The bitter flavor draws from that memory, and the smooth finish is a tribute to the resilience of valley folk. 100% citra hops, double dry hopped. (contains lactose)

  • Sheridan's Raid 2

New England DIPA - 7.7% ABV

He brought 50,000 Yankees into the Valley to burn our barns. The hops bitterness draws from that memory, and the smooth finish is a tribute to the resilience of valley folk. Double dry hopped with 100% citra hops - for a citrusy tang. This the second variant of Sheridan’s Raid has a boosted malt bill with a more complex mixture of hand selected malts. (contains lactose)

  • Sheridan's Raid 3

    Double NEIPA – 8.5% ABV

He brought 50,000 Yankees into the Valley to burn our barns. The bitter flavor draws from that memory, and the smooth finish is a tribute to the resilience of valley folk. 100% citra hops, double dry hopped, with a touch of pineapple for a well balanced New England IPA!

  • SNP Chimneys

Cherry Smoked Saison – 11.3% ABV

For many locals, Shenandoah National Park has a sour and smoky history. After being evicted from the park nearly 100 years ago, their homes were burned to the ground to keep them from coming back. All that remains, hidden and scattered throughout the park are the chimneys of those homes. They still act as monuments to the frontier families who used to call the Blue Ridge Mountains home. Cherry wood smoked barley with French Saison yeast and tart cherry puree offer a tasteful tribute to those families. A unique mix of smoky, tart and sour.

  • SNP Stumpkin

    Pumpkin Stout – 8% ABV

While many locals may have been unfairly displaced from their homes in the Blue Ridge Mountains for the sake of creating a park (See SNP Chimneys description), we can at least all agree that ending the deforestation in the Blue Ridge was a good thing! This pumpkin-spiced stout is a seasonal tribute to the end of stump-making in our mountains. We’ll take the SNP’s beautiful Fall colors over stumps any day!

  • SomBeech

    Rauchbier – 6% ABV

This SomBeech is a smoky SomBeech! We used some beechwood-smoked barley to give this SomBeech a deliciously smooth smoke flavor. Grab yourself a SomBeech and get your combined smoke and beer fix! This beer is a tribute to our local dialects, which efficiently blend multiple words into single words. Aint nobody got time for all them words!

  • Spent Grain

    Patersbier - 3.5% ABV

Normally, after brewing a beer, the malt is discarded - usually/popularly used by local farmers to supplement into their livestock’s diet. Local farmers always race to be the first here to grab the used malt. Similarly, local famers for decades used to come to this same building for grain for their livestock. The used malt we put out is known as “spent grain.” However, for select beer styles, the malt is dense enough that a much lighter variant of the initial beer can be produced by using the spent grain for a second brew cycle. Enter the Patersbier! After brewing a batch of a higher ABV, more malt-dense Belgian style Tripel (“Tripel Trek”), we kept all the malt, which would have otherwise been spent grain, and we filled the kettles again for another beer with the same malt! There was still plenty of malt goodness left to create this surprisingly flavorful and crushable light beer! A great beer for a hot day! Sorry local cattle, this batch of spent grain was reserved for our patrons!

  • Split Valley

    NEIPA – 7.5% ABV

Valley families were split over the war. Many were swayed by New England influence, and many remained loyal to Virginia and their home in the Shenandoah Valley. Similarly, this recipe's loyalty is split. We took our popular 100% Citra-hopped Sheridan's Raid NEIPA recipe and split the hops: 50% Citra Hops + 50% Cashmere Hops. Both sides come together to create a deliciously balanced mixture! Differences can be resolved, especially over a pint!

  • Spruced Up Viking

Spruce Tip IPA – 6.8% ABV

This delicious IPA was brewed with local spruce tips from the “blonde bear’s” home. His father brought this particular spruce tree straight from Norway long ago and planted it on their family farm here in Elkton. Dry-hopped with Citra hops. Norwegian Kveik yeast + Norway Spruce tips + local viking (aka: “Blonde Bear”) = Spruced Up Viking. Simple math, really.

  • Store of 1812

English Mild Ale – 5.8% ABV

We’re pretty sure something else significant happened in 1812 – something to do with England – but all that matters is that “Conrad’s Store” was erected in 1812, which is what our town was known as for decades before being named “Elkton.” The store was built and run by George Conrad, the son of an American Revolution veteran… There seems to be a theme here. Twice we had to kick out the redcoats, but we’re always happy to keep their beer! This English Mild Ale is smooth, malty, and nutty, with hints of spice and floral notes from East Kent Goldings hops.

  • Straw Bear

    Strawberry Blonde – 5.2% ABV

Our favorite “Blonde Bear” got into a strawberry patch! This is the right time of year for our local bears to pig out, and berries are a significant part of their pre-hibernation diet. In the same way, this is a delicious, light, and fruity beer to take down before you hit the hay (or STRAW)!

  • Strawberry Fields

    Strawberry + Vanilla IPA – 6% ABV

A favorite local pastime is to go berry picking at a number of farms in our area! But this usually involves lots of time in the blazing sun. Who says you HAVE to put in all that work for a blast of berry goodness?! This deliciously crushable IPA is packed with strawberries and a fantastic balance of vanilla (like a strawberry creamsicle!). Beat the heat with this end of Summer crusher!

  • Sunk Millsner

    Double Pilsner – 7.8% ABV

Noble hopped with Saaz out the wazoo! With semi-spicy floral and earthy notes. Crisp, yet thick and boozy. Only a handful of locals know about the old mill ruins that lie beneath years of overgrowth on the bank of the Shenandoah River just a half mile from us. We did another Pilsner in the past named “River Millsner” to offer tribute to that mill. This one is a good bit heavier and packs a punch, much like the flood of 1870 which destroyed the mill, leaving the ruins to slowly be forgotten by most people over the last 150 years. The mill was a woolen mill that manufactured Confederate uniforms during the Civil War. Since we’re bringing it back into remembrance, Is it politically incorrect to say THE MILL WILL RISE AGAIN?!

  • Sweet Stonewall

    Pineapple DIPA - 8% ABV

This DNEIPA is in the same line as our popular “Sheridan’s Raid,” and “Three Battles” IPA’s. Brewed with Nelson, Citra, and Azacca hops and finished off with a heavy dose of sweet pineapple to combat the bitterness and balance out this delicious IPA! In the same way, Sheridan’s dirty tactics here in the valley left a lot of local folks with lingering bitterness for a long time. Stonewall Jackson was headquartered here in Elkton during the Valley Campaign, offering strong resistance to Union advances. You might say he was the sweet pineapple that brought balance to the bitterness. Not really in the mood for another bitter IPA? Looking for something hoppy, but more on the sweet, juicy and refreshing side? Resist the bitterness with Sweet Stonewall!

  • Swole Sweat

Prickly Pear, Oaxacan Peppers, GOSE - 5.5% ABV

First off, we have to say it tastes way better than it sounds! We brewed this delicious Gose as our first collaboration with our chef brother, Jacob, who prepped the Oaxacan Peppers for the beer and helped out with the brewing in our cellar. This recipe is his brainchild. Jacob is known locally as the “Swole Chef” (as is his awesome food-prep business. Check him out!). His food caters to supporting people’s health and fitness goals. A Gose beer is the perfect fit for the fitness-minded. Brewed with salt and coriander, as is the German tradition for the style, and fruited with prickly pear and Oaxacan peppers, this deliciously tart beer is unique and refreshing. And NO, we did not use Swole Chef’s sweat in the beer for the needed salt (at least, not intentionally). Replenish your post-workout sweat salt with Swole Sweat!

  • Swole Sweat(ier)

SPICY Chipotle Pepper + Prickly Pear GOSE – 6.0% ABV

First off, we have to say it tastes way better than it sounds! We brewed the first batch of this Gose (Swole Sweat) as our first collaboration with our chef brother, Jacob, who is known locally as “Swole Chef” (as is his awesome food-prep business. Check him out!). His food caters to supporting people’s health and fitness goals. A Gose beer is the perfect fit for the fitness-minded. Brewed with salt and coriander, as is the German tradition for the style, and fruited with prickly pear and spicy chipotle peppers, this tart and SPICY beer is unique and refreshing. Just like his food will help you achieve your fitness goals, this one will get you sweating (which could contribute to your weight loss goals)! And NO, we did not use Swole Chef’s sweat in the beer for the needed salt (at least, not intentionally). Replenish your post-workout sweat salt with Swole Sweat(ier)!

  • Tabby Tiger

Orange + Cranberry Blonde Ale - 5.2% ABV

Somewhere in between Odell’s Tiger (our popular blood orange blonde ale) and Polar Bear (our Christmas cranberry, orange, and cinnamon blonde ale), lies the Tabby Tiger. This slightly tamer (more domesticated) version of the previous two has a softer orange flavor with hints of cranberry and cinnamon buns! A great beer to transition out of the holidays with!

  • Takahia Wapiti

New Zealand TRIPLE IPA - 9.7% ABV

In the same recipe line as “Takitoru Wapiti” (our first triple NZ IPA), this one is HEAVY! “Takahia Wapiti,” is native NZ Maori for “elk stampede!” If you’re not careful with this one it will run you over! It is appropriately named, as it is densely packed with rich hops flavor and all the mouthfeel that goes with a beer this heavily hopped, a well balanced bitter finish, and booziness. It will have all your taste buds screaming “STAMPEEEEED” when you release the wapiti!

  • Takitoru Wapiti

New Zealand Triple IPA - 9.7% ABV

”Takitoru Wapiti” is Maori (native New Zealand language) for “Triple Elk.” This may be the 10th IPA we’ve brewed in the “Wapiti” series, but it is the first time we’ve done a TRIPLE IPA in that line. This beer is bursting with all the good things we’ve loved about our NZ IPA’s. It is juicy, robust, hoppy, well balanced, rich, and just plain delicious! Grab a pour and see for yourself!

  • Tangy Tiger

Tangerine Cherry Blonde – 6% ABV

In the same family as our very popular Odell’s Tiger (blood orange blonde), this blonde has a delicious tangy punch with subtle hints of cherry. The combination of tangerine and cherry makes for a uniquely refreshing beer - though not as unique as a tiger in Elkton, Virginia.

  • Tapawha Wapiti

New Zealand QUAD IPA – 13% ABV

Introducing the strongest IPA we have ever tapped in (by a hefty margin)! Brewed (more like blasted) with Nelson Sauvin and Motueka hops for a rich and full-bodied flavor experience! Just like how Teddy Roosevelt filled New Zealand’s wild landscape with American Elk so that he could hunt them there. After all, he couldn't hunt elk here in the Shenandoah Valley since they were all killed off by 1855 (due to unrestricted hunting). This Quad IPA is a tribute to the magnificent beasts that used to roam these hills in great herds, where our town gets its name.

  • The Apple Achian

Apple Pie Sour (Apple + Graham Cracker + Vanilla) – 6% ABV

Whatever apple variety is your daily go-to to keep the doctor away, we can all agree that apples and the Appalachians go together like moonshine and the hollers. As we enter into Christmas season, drink back this delicious apple pie sour, which is full of tart apple flavor, crisp and refreshing, and has a well balanced graham cracker and vanilla finish (like a good pie crust)! Who doesn’t love a good apple pie for the holidays?!

  • The Nutt

    Brown Ale – 5.0% ABV

Cheers to our favorite resort! A classic brown, like the ski slopes in March, except this one is smoother. Delicious and malt-forward. Much like the resort, this is a very easy beer to enjoy for all beer drinkers.

  • The Zetty

American Strong Ale - 8% ABV

Someone like local legend Herman Zetty, who lived here in Elkton in the early-mid 1900’s, deserves to have a beer named after him. What better beer to offer as a tribute than an American Strong Ale - with a strong, boozy, malt forward flavor, and fermented with rye whiskey soaked oak spirals! Herman was well known for riding his horse wherever he went (sometimes indoors) with a six-shooter on his hip and a cowboy hat resting on his head, like a gun-slinging cowboy of old. When Herman went to the Elkton Theatre to see his first ever motion picture (a Western/cowboy flick, of course) in the 1950’s, he was drawn into the movie magic a bit too much. When the bandits were about to ambush the good guys, Zetty came to the rescue and rose from his seat full of stoic heroism. Drawing his six-shooter in the middle of the theatre full of unsuspecting men, women, and children, he fired at the screen. A mother who was there with her young son simply shouted, “Damnit, Herman! Put your gun away!”

  • Three Battles

    NE IPA – 7.9% ABV

Sheridan won three major battles that gave the Union an upper hand in the fight for control over the Shenandoah Valley. Likewise, this NEIPA has three different hops variations, all of which contribute to the rich flavor. Citra, Cashmere, and Azacca hops for the win!

  • Three Battles (2)

New England DIPA - 8.6% ABV

Our second rendition of Three Battles. This one has a little more potency than the first batch, and we like it! Sheridan won three major battles that gave the Union an upper hand in the fight for control over the Shenandoah Valley. Likewise, this NEIPA has three different hops variations, all of which contribute to the rich flavor. Citra, Cashmere, and Azacca hops for the win! A juicy, hazy, IPA, that packs a punch!

  • Three Battles (3)

    DIPA – 8.5% ABV

Our third rendition of Three Battles. This one has a little more potency than the first batch, and we like it! Sheridan won three major battles that gave the Union an upper hand in the fight for control over the Shenandoah Valley. Likewise, this NEIPA has three different hops variations, all of which contribute to the rich and well balanced flavor. Citra, Azacca, and Enigma hops for the win! A juicy, hazy IPA, that packs a punch!

  • To-Kill-A Bear

Tequila Barrel Aged Imperial Blonde Ale (+ lemonlime + orange) - 10.5% ABV

Another variant of our flagship blonde ale (Blonde Bear) to add to the “Bear” series! Except this one was aged in a tequila barrel for about 8 months and finished off with a little lemon-lime and orange! Most locals will remember the big FBI sting operation that took place here in town - aimed at catching people who were poaching local black bears to harvest their gallbladders to sell to the Chinese. If you’re going to hunt a bear, do it responsibly. Likewise, drink this one responsibly, as it is a lot stronger than it tastes. Things are not always as they seem (like the outdoor shop that turned out to be run by the FBI…).

  • Tripel Trek

    Belgian Tripel – 8.0% ABV

It takes a strong spirit to trek any of the three Triple Crown Trails. The Appalachian Trail is no exception. At 2190 miles, 544 of which are in Virginia, and 101 are right here in our Shenandoah National Park, this trail is not one to underestimate. Likewise, don’t underestimate this Belgian style Tripel. The deceptively light, refreshing, and smooth flavor can distract you from the 8% ABV.

  • Tuleesecake

Keylime Cheesecake Gose – 7% ABV

This uniquely delicious gose is bursting with flavors! It is tart and sour, and well balanced with keylime, cheesecake, and vanilla.

  • Tuleesecake 2

Strawberry Cheesecake Gose – 6% ABV

This uniquely delicious gose is bursting with flavors! It is tart and sour, and well balanced with strawberry, cheesecake, and hints of vanilla.

  • Tuleyberry Pie

Mixed Berry + Graham Cracker + Vanilla GOSE – 5.5% ABV

The base recipe for this beer is “Gose Tuley,” named after Colonel Gos Tuley, who was responsible for killing the last known indigenous Virginia Elk in 1855 just North of us. That very elk is still on display at the Smithsonian today. We often like to blame the disappearance of our native eastern elk on Teddy Roosevelt, who gifted a whole herd to New Zealand. Whether they are gone as a result of unrestricted hunting by people like Gos Tuley, or by way of zealous generosity from ol’ Teddy, either way we ain’t happy they’re gone. We fruited this Gose with mixed berries, with additional flavors (graham cracker and vanilla) for a delicious mixed berry pie taste. A tart and fruity start with a smooth graham cracker finish. A sour memory deserves a sour beer.

  • Tuley's Tiger

Blood Orange + Tart Cherry GOSE – 5.8% ABV

Gos Tuley was responsible for killing off the last of the endangered native Virginia Elk just North of us in 1855. Some years later, a certain Elkton native brought a number of endangered species to his home in Elkton. Sure, they weren’t exactly animals that ever would have naturally called Elkton home (like tigers and polar bears), but it was nonetheless a balancing act as far as we’re concerned. Likewise, this batch is well balanced with blood orange and tart cherry (plus the style-specific sea salt and coriander) for a deliciously tart and juicy Gose! Like Tuley’s elk, this one will be short lived. And like Odell’s tigers, it has an exotic flavor and a tart bite!

  • Uncommon Elk

    California Common – 7.2% ABV

A beer style that is about as common around here as native Virginia Elk. Few things that are common in Cali’ are common in Elkton. Features notes of toasted caramel, graham crackers, and sweet maltiness, with a beautiful deep amber color.

  • Vallée Divisée

    Double NEIPA - 8%

We took our delicious Split Valley NEIPA recipe (which came from our popular Sheridan’s Raid NEIPA) and gave it a French twist! Valley families were split over the war. Many were swayed by New England influence, and many remained loyal to Virginia and their home in the Shenandoah Valley. Most residents, including Union sympathizers, developed a disdain for Sheridan’s dirty barn-burning tactics. If both sides could reconcile and make amends after that war, then we should be able to do the same today! Hopped with Citra hops and French Barbe-Rouge hops. Both come together to create a deliciously balanced mixture! Differences can be resolved, especially over a pint! So put aside your differences and toast to unlikely friendships!

  • Wapiti Kakano

New Zealand DIPA – 8% ABV

Brewed with native NZ Feijoa Fruit, Hort 9909 Hops, Rakau Hops, and Nelson Sauvin Hops (all native to New Zealand). “Wapiti Kakano” means “elk seed” in Maori (the native New Zealand language). In the early 1900’s Teddy Roosevelt gifted a bunch of American Elk to New Zealand. They are still roaming the hills of New Zealand to this day, spreading their seed and multiplying! We always wondered where all our native Elkton elk went. Now we know… Now we know…

  • Wapiti Mimi

Double New Zealand IPA – 8.8% ABV

Brewed with Feijoa Fruit Puree, Riwaka Hops, Motueka Hops, Wakatu Hops (all native to New Zealand). “Wapiti Mimi” means “elk pee” in Maori (the native New Zealand language). In the early 1900’s Teddy Roosevelt gifted a bunch of American Elk to New Zealand. They are still roaming the hills of New Zealand to this day! We always wondered where all our native Elkton elk went. Now we know… Now we know…

  • Wapiti Rangi

Double New Zealand IPA – 8.3% ABV

Another Wapiti beer for the lineup! “Wapiti Rangi” is native NZ Maori for “Elk Heaven.” The Shenandoah Valley used to be such a place for its many indigenous inhabitants. Unprotected, the amazing valley elk were hunted without regulation until every last elk in Virginia was killed by 1855. Not long after this, Teddy Roosevelt gifted a herd of Rocky Mountain Elk to New Zealand, where hunting is regulated and the species is protected from the risk of extinction. The Valley may not be Heaven for elk anymore, but perhaps New Zealand is where the lost spirits of our native elk live on! This batch was brewed with three delicious New Zealand hops varieties: Nelson Sauvin, Motueka, Nectaron. This combination, strategically balanced, offers a real treat for your tastebuds! It is bursting with unique hops flavor, and well balanced with an appropriate amount of bitterness.

  • Wapiti Toto

New Zealand DIPA – 8% ABV

First came Wapiti Mimi (“Elk Urine”) as a tribute to the beautiful beasts who marked their territory and called Elkton home long ago. Then came Wapiti Kakano (“Elk Seed”), by which they flourished and spread throughout our area. Then came Pepi Wapiti (“Baby Elk”), which was the fruitfulness of that seeding. And now, in the same line of great NZ IPA’s, we have Wapiti Toto (“Elk Blood”), which shall be a memorial to the unfortunate demise of our native valley elk. Full bodied flavor, with blood orange and cherry puree, and three different New Zealand hops: nectaron, taiheke, & moutere.

  • Wapiti Urupa

New Zealand Double IPA - 8.8% ABV

A new beer in our popular and delicious “Wapiti” series of New Zealand IPA’s! Brewed with an assortment of native New Zealand hops - Nelson Sauvin, Motueka, and Rakau hops - this DIPA is bursting with rich, juicy, and tropical hops flavor, with a soft and subtle bitterness balanced on the finish. We joke that the disappearance of the majestic creatures, from which our town’s namesake came, was due to Teddy Roosevelt gifting a herd to New Zealand a long time ago. The truth, however, is sadder than that. Our sour Gose beer, “Gose Tuley,” tells the true story. “Wapiti Urupa,” is Maori (native NZ) for “Elk Grave.” May this delicious and exotic beer serve as a memorial to those long-since-extinct Virginia Elk.

  • Wapiti Wairua

New Zealand DIPA – 8% ABV

Our fifth IPA in the “Wapiti” line, “Wapiti Wairua” means “Elk Spirit” in the native New Zealand Maori language. Some of us believe that Teddy Roosevelt stole all our native Virginia Elk to gift to New Zealand back in the day, and that is how they really disappeared. Thus the spirit of our long-lost elk lives on in the hills of New Zealand, in our hearts, and in this beer. Using Wai-iti Hops, Pacific Jade Hops, and Kohatu Hops, and Fruited with the popular New Zealand feijoa fruit, this NZ-DIPA is bursting with unique flavors!

  • Wapiti Waiu

New Zealand DIPA - 8.3% ABV

One of the juiciest NZ IPA’s we’ve brewed to date! With a heavy dose of 100% Nelson Sauvin hops, which give a white wine grape flavor and aroma, and phantasm (derived from grapes), this IPA is rich and dense with flavor! This beer’s backstory is in line with all the other “Wapiti” IPA’s we’ve put out. The gist of it is this: people like Teddy Roosevelt are the reason we have no more native Virginia Elk - due to unrestricted sport hunting. That said, Teddy did spread the love and send a whole herd of American Elk to New Zealand, where they are currently thriving!

  • Weizen Bär – (Elktoberfest!)

    Bavarian Wheat – 4.5% ABV

You’ve had our Blonde Bear. You’ve had our Blue Bear. And now you can have our Weizen Bär, or “Wheat Bear.” Just picture the Blonde Bear in a lederhosen! Deliciously crushable, nutty, wheaty/bready, with notes of banana. If you enjoy a good hefeweizen, then you’ll love this one. It is like a lighter hefe! Crisp and refreshing!

  • Wort 100

    Rauchbier – 6.0% ABV

A tribute to the 100 Württemberg Germans who our own Al Spotswood purchased as indentured servants in 1717. Their influence has made its way along the Spotswood Trail and into our brew cellar! This German style Rauchbier is smooth, malty, and quite smoky. Like drinking a live campfire.

  • Wort 100 (2)

Rauchbier (Smoke Beer) – 5.8% ABV

A tribute to the 100 Württemberg Germans who our own Al Spotswood purchased as indentured servants in 1717. Those 100 Germans hired a ship captain to charter a ship to the Americas so they could make their way to Pennsylvania, where other relatives had already immigrated. The ship made a pitstop at England where the captain was arrested for unpaid debts. During his incarceration, the German immigrants exhausted all of their supplies and money that they planned on using for the journey. After the captain was released, they departed, and he began to piece together a dirty plot to exploit the Germans and their lack of money while at the same time satisfying his debt in England. So the captain pretended to get off course in a storm and landed in Virginia instead of Pennsylvania, where he sold the Germans into indentured servitude, and they never made their way to PA. Their influence stuck around and made its way along the Spotswood Trail and into our brew cellar! This German style Rauchbier is smooth and malty, with a pleasantly subtle smoke finish. Like drinking campfire vibes.

  • Yagermaster

    Krystalweizen – 5.5% ABV

Grover Yager, a well known scoutmaster here in Elkton many years ago, was known to be a man of high integrity, who played a significant role in steering many young men onto a right path. Hobby Robinson said of Yager, “morally, the finest man I ever knew.” That statement bears a lot of weight coming from the likes of Hobby. Yager’s positive influence had a great impact on many. This beer is a tribute to that man. It is refreshing and “krystal” clear, like Yager’s reputation!
